Playa de Puerto Rey is one of the beaches of Vera, on the Costa de Almería, fronting the low-rise Puerto Rey urbanisation between the Río Antas estuary and the neighbouring Playazo. It runs for about 1.3 kilometres and is generously wide, with dark sand of mixed fine and coarse grain that is largely free of stones underfoot, so it is easy to walk on and easy to get in and out of the water from.
The great virtue of Puerto Rey is how much room there is. It is a well-used beach in summer, but its sheer size means it rarely feels crowded, and early evening is a lovely time to be here: warm water, few rocks, hardly anyone else on the sand. The beach is open to the sea, so expect a breeze and a moderate swell, and the entry into the water is gradual.
There are loungers and parasols to hire, chiringuitos and kiosks along the sand, showers and foot-washes, a children's play area, parking, and lifeguard cover in season. A sailing school and kayak club operate here too. It suits swimmers who want space, families, and anyone whose idea of a beach day is a lounger, a long swim and lunch without a queue.
