Playa de Poniente is Motril's western beach on Granada's Costa Tropical, more than two kilometres long, with the commercial port at its eastern end. The surface is cobbles and fine gravel rather than sand, dark and coarse underfoot, and a buoyed swimming area with a marked nautical lane keeps bathers and craft apart.

The Paseo Rey Balduino runs behind the sand, with kiosks, chiringuitos and restaurants along it. There are loungers and parasols for hire, changing rooms, showers with footwash, toilets, a lifeguard and first-aid post, and adapted walkways, amphibious chairs and flotation vests. Beyond that: pedalos, a children's area, beach football, volleyball and tennis courts, and a night market once a week in summer.
