El Chambao de Joaquín

4.1

Pebbles beach

El Chambao de Joaquín has been on the beach at La Herradura since 1952, on the Paseo Andrés Segovia where the bay curves round on Granada's Costa Tropical. Decades on it is still a family beach restaurant rather than a club, open to the sand and busy from late morning until well after dark.

The kitchen works around the fire and the rice pans: giant paellas made fresh each day in season, espetos de sardinas, barbecued octopus, grilled meats, fresh fish and shellfish. For those who don't eat seafood, there are burgers and chips too. Sunbeds are put out on the beach during the season.

Live music is a regular fixture and evenings can run long, with the bay as the setting and a family feel throughout.

Playa de La Herradura

Nestled along the stunning Costa Tropical, Playa de La Herradura is a breathtaking stretch of coastline famous for its unique horseshoe shape. This natural curve provides a perfect sanctuary, keeping the crystal-clear waters calm and flat as a mill pond even when the breeze picks up elsewhere. Walking along the shore, you’re greeted by the sight of swaying palm trees and a vast, deep blue horizon that invites you to leave your worries behind and simply breathe in the salty air.

The beach itself is a spacious, free public haven made of small, smooth sea pebbles that feel surprisingly pleasant underfoot. It’s a fantastic spot for both relaxation and adventure; while many choose to lounge on sunbeds or enjoy a meal at one of the many excellent beachfront restaurants, others head to the rocky edges for world-class snorkeling and diving. The underwater life here is vibrant and rich, making it a favorite for those looking to explore the hidden beauty of the Mediterranean.

Whether you’re spreading out a blanket for a quiet afternoon or catching the golden sun with friends, the atmosphere is remarkably peaceful and clean. While it’s wise to arrive before 9 AM to snag a parking spot, the reward is a full day of tranquility. With convenient amenities like showers and public toilets nearby, it’s the kind of place where you can truly connect with nature and enjoy the gentle rhythm of the sea in one of Spain’s most beautiful bays.
